Legal Officer - Government Department - 6-Month contract

We’re looking for a motivated Legal Officer to provide expert advice, guidance, and operational support across a busy government department, contributing to fair and efficient outcomes for our clients.

About the Role

As the Legal Officer for this government department,  you’ll provide information, advice and assistance to both internal and external stakeholders on a range of complex matters. You’ll manage day-to-day operations, supervise a small team, and handle escalated issues to ensure effective service delivery and continuous improvement.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing stakeholder engagement, team leadership, and operational problem-solving in a high-volume, service-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clear, accurate advice and guidance to the team and stakeholders on relevant policies, processes, and documentation.
  • Oversee the collection and collation of documentation to support efficient grant and case management.
  • Respond to a variety of internal and external enquiries, including escalations, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Supervise, coach, and support team members to meet service standards and deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Apply relevant legislation, procedures, and frameworks to facilitate appropriate client outcomes.
  • Monitor workload, identify trends or emerging issues, and contribute to process improvements and decision-making.
  • Maintain specialised knowledge and continuously develop expertise to support high-quality service delivery.
About You
  • Demonstrated experience supervising a team in a customer service, business support, or case management environment.
  • Strong ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, or legislation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage workloads and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes.
  • A collaborative and resilient approach to dealing with sensitive or complex enquiries.
