Primary Purpose of the Role
The Audit & Assurance Officer undertakes independent reviews across Council operations in line with the approved audit program. The role focuses on strengthening governance, risk management and internal controls by applying a systematic and disciplined audit approach, while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of the strategic internal audit plan.
- Deliver risk-based internal audits in accordance with the annual audit program, including planning, fieldwork, reporting and follow-up of agreed actions.
- Conduct investigations into suspected fraud, corruption, and misconduct, ensuring appropriate escalation and reporting.
- Perform probity and assurance reviews across Council functions and projects.
- Support the coordination and preparation of Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC) meetings, including reporting and documentation.
- Monitor and review the effectiveness of internal audit frameworks, systems and processes, driving continuous improvement.
- Build strong relationships and effectively engage stakeholders across all levels of the organisation.
- Attend Council and Committee meetings as required and provide expert audit advice.
- Undertake additional duties aligned to the role and organisational priorities.
Qualifications & Experience Essential
- Degree in Business, Commerce, Accounting or related discipline
- Professional qualification such as CA, CPA, IPA or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience in internal audit, risk, or assurance functions
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage across all organisational levels
- Proven ability to analyse complex issues and provide practical solutions
- Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) qualification
- 8+ years’ experience in internal audit or assurance
- Experience within local government or public sector
